Effective date: ยท Last updated:
This Privacy Policy explains how News Appite ("we", "us" or "our"), the operator of news.appite.in (the "Website"), collects, uses, shares and protects information when you visit or interact with the Website. By using the Website you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the Website.
1. Information we collect
News Appite is a free news website. You can read every article without creating an account, and we collect as little personal information as possible.
1.1 Information you give us
- Email correspondence. If you email us (for tips, corrections, feedback or advertising enquiries) we receive your email address, your name if you provide it, and the content of your message.
- Search queries. Words you type into the site search are processed to show results; they are not linked to your identity.
1.2 Information collected automatically
When you visit the Website, our servers and analytics tools automatically record standard technical data ("Usage Data"), such as:
- IP address (truncated/anonymised in analytics where possible), approximate location (city/country) derived from it;
- browser type and version, operating system, device type and screen size;
- pages viewed, the referring page, date and time of visits, and time spent on pages;
- cookie identifiers and similar identifiers described in section 3.
We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal data (such as financial details, government ID numbers, health data or religious or political beliefs) and ask that you do not send such information to us.
2. How we use information
We use the information above to:
- operate, secure and maintain the Website and detect abuse or fraud;
- understand which stories and sections readers find useful so we can improve our journalism;
- measure traffic and site performance (for example page load times and errors);
- display advertising that keeps the Website free, as described in section 4;
- respond to your messages, correction requests and enquiries;
- comply with legal obligations and enforce our Disclaimer.
Where the EU/UK GDPR applies, our legal bases are: legitimate interests (running and improving a news website, security, measuring readership), consent (non-essential cookies and personalised advertising, where required) and legal obligation.
3. Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. We and our partners use the following types:
- Strictly necessary cookies โ required for the Website to work (for example, security tokens and your light/dark theme preference). These cannot be switched off.
- Analytics cookies โ set by Google Analytics to help us understand how readers use the Website (see section 4).
- Advertising cookies โ set by Google and its advertising partners to show relevant ads and to limit how often you see the same ad.
You can control cookies through your browser settings (usually under "Privacy" or "Site data"). Blocking some cookies may affect how the Website works. Where the law requires it, we will ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies, and you can withdraw that consent at any time through the cookie settings link shown on the site.
4. Advertising (Google AdSense) and analytics
4.1 Google AdSense and third-party advertising
We use Google AdSense and may use other third-party advertising networks to display ads. These vendors use cookies (including the Google DoubleClick cookie) and similar technologies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites, and to measure ad performance.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to this Website and/or other sites on the internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of many third-party vendors' cookies at www.aboutads.info or www.youronlinechoices.eu.
- Learn how Google uses data when you use our site: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Third-party ad servers and networks have their own privacy policies; we do not control the cookies they set.
4.2 Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to measure readership. Google Analytics uses cookies and collects Usage Data, which Google processes on our behalf. IP anonymisation is enabled where the tool supports it. You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting your data by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.
4.3 Social sharing and embedded content
Articles may include share buttons and embedded content (for example YouTube videos, X/Twitter posts or Instagram posts). When you interact with these, the relevant platform may collect data and set its own cookies in accordance with its privacy policy.
5. When we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only:
- with service providers that help us run the Website โ hosting, content delivery, analytics and advertising partners โ who process data only on our instructions or under their own published policies (for Google, see section 4);
- when required by law, court order or a government request, or to protect the rights, property or safety of News Appite, our readers or others;
- as part of a merger, acquisition or transfer of the Website, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your information.
6. Data retention and security
Server logs are kept for a limited period (typically no more than 90 days) for security and troubleshooting. Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics' retention settings (currently up to 14 months). Email correspondence is kept as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and for our records.
We use HTTPS encryption, access controls and regular software updates to protect information. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.
7. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you and receive a copy;
- ask us to correct inaccurate data or erase your data;
- object to or restrict certain processing, including direct marketing;
- withdraw consent where processing is based on consent;
- lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
Readers in India: we process personal data in line with the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. You may contact our grievance contact at the email address below; grievances are acknowledged promptly and resolved within the statutory time limit.
Readers in the EEA/UK: the rights above apply under the GDPR/UK GDPR. Readers in California: you have the right to know what personal information is collected and to opt out of its "sale" or "sharing" for cross-context behavioural advertising โ use the opt-out links in section 4 or contact us.
To exercise any of these rights, email contact@appite.in. We may ask you to verify your identity before acting on a request.
8. Children's privacy
The Website is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13 (or the age of digital consent in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
9. Third-party websites
Our articles link to external websites for sourcing and further reading. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites and encourage you to read their privacy policies.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time โ for example when we add new features or when the law changes. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page shows when it was most recently revised. Continued use of the Website after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.
