Kushi Music - Tamil Superhit Album

What made Kushi a superhit film

Kushi, a Tamil superhit film starring Vijay and Jyotika, was released in the summer of 2000. The film was directed by SJ Suryah and had music composed by Deva. The music album was one of the highlights of the film.

The film was a romance that audiences laud even today, and the music was a key factor in its success. The songs were conceptualised in a hotel, Hotel Maurya International in Vadapalani, where SJ Surya and Deva sat down to crack the music.

Who was Deva and his contribution to Kushi

Deva was a renowned music director who passed away at the age of 75. He was known for his work in Tamil cinema and had composed music for many films, including Kushi. Deva's music bridged seemingly disparate worlds — the earthy rhythms of Chennai’s gaana tradition, the mass appeal of Tamil cinema, and the melodic richness of classical and devotional music.

Deva recalled that the composition sessions for Kushi were full of fun and laughter. He said that SJ Surya knew the audience's pulse and that his judgment of the music was always right.

How the songs of Kushi were composed

The toughest song to crack was ‘Megham Karukuthu’, featuring Jyotika. Deva recalled that SJ Surya gave him a line to work with: ‘A girl is returning to her village after studies, and she becomes ecstatic at the sight of greenery and rain.’ Based on this interpretation, Deva produced a tune.

Deva was not satisfied with the tune initially, but SJ Surya loved it. The song went on to become a superhit, proving that SJ Surya's judgment was right.

What the cast and crew have to say about Kushi

SJ Surya, the director of Kushi, is now a busy actor. He recently impressed fans with his performance in Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2. Deva always credited lyricist Vairamuthu and the singers for the album's success.
